Frequently asked question

Can you build multilingual sites?

Yes, and more often than you would think. Kirby has multilingual support built in: one file per language per page, so translating does not mean building the structure twice. We have made sites in two, three, five and seven languages — from Dutch and French to Greek.

Multilingual is more than translated words

The text is the easy part. The details are the work: dates and prices in the right notation, forms and error messages in the same language as the page, confirmation emails that switch along, and the right language markup so Google doesn’t serve the French page to Dutch readers.

And then the question that always comes up: what if a page isn’t translated yet? We would rather show the Dutch version than an empty screen.

From practice

  • A menu where every dish sits in five languages on one row, with a single price
  • A baby care webshop in seven languages
  • A café in Greece, in Greek and English
  • A museum welcome desk where the Dutch text hangs on the wall and the QR code takes you to English or French
